NOTES
In Miners, Joe Jones utilizes a somber palette and the grim expressions of the workers to convey the harsh conditions endured by Arkansas miners. Jones converted to Communism in 1933, and for the next several years he focused his artistic energies on subjects that communicated his new political convictions. The standing figure at left raises his right fist in the widely recognized symbol of the power of united workers. Jones built his national reputation on works such as Miners, which expressed his social concerns.
