NOTES
Shapes advance and recede simultaneously in this painting, sometimes overlapping, and sometimes reinforcing each other. Ralston Crawford's boxcar paintings are derived from photographs. The forms depicted in the photographs, however, have been analyzed and broken apart. As Crawford remarked, "I don't feel obligated to reveal the forms. They may be totally absent to the viewer of the work . . . but what is there, however abstract, grows out of something I have seen."
