NOTES
In this work, Mary is portrayed as a heavenly queen who tends to the needs of her infant, Jesus. The overall form is particularly elongated and elegant. The sculptor has aligned the child’s torso with his mother, presenting the pair as a subtle curving shape. This curve is enhanced by the clinging drapery that falls in gentle folds at Mary’s right side. The short base on which she stands is decorated with motifs used by late 16th-century goldsmiths. Its narrow proportions make her gracefully extended figure appear even taller.
