NOTES
This extraordinary vase entitled The Sea, or La Mer, evokes the form and action of water. Projections around the mouth and shoulder are the momentary froth of cresting waves while the color of the ocean is suggested by glazes of crystalline green streaked with red. Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat was one of the most prominent ceramists in late 19th-century France; his gift for capturing the movement of water can be compared to that of the Impressionist painters.
