NOTES

The robust form of this jar with its irregular rich, green glaze typifies the stonewares produced at rural potteries throughout Japan from around the 13th century. Tamba was one of the most famous and among the largest producers of basic utilitarian wares such as this. The rough, rustic aesthetic of these pots accorded with the taste of chanoyu tea ceremony masters; Tamba wares frequently were appropriated for use in the chanoyu tea ceremony or were designed specifically for it.
