NOTES
The artist Ginkō portrayed the intense shelling of the Jinzhou fortress in this triptych. The Japanese artillery was positioned largely outside the northern and eastern sides of the fortress. The view presented here is from the west on Jinzhou Bay, with a Japanese battleship in the harbor providing cover for troops on the ground. Flames leap toward the dark sky. The strategically located Jinzhou fortress was one of the keys to capturing the Liaodong Peninsula and Port Arthur at its tip. On November 6, 1894, the Second Army and the First Division launched a fierce artillery attack on the fortress. Within an hour, the Chinese garrison withdrew and fled.
