Notes:
[1] An inscription by the artist on the reverse of the painting indicates that it was painted in Douglastown, Long Island, where Grosz was living in 1936. It is one of many still life paintings that the artist created between 1936 and 1939.

A label previously on the reverse of the painting from the Associated American Artists, Inc. in New York, indicates that this picture was either exhibited or stored there at one time. The painting, however, is not listed among the gallery's records, now housed at the Syracuse University Archive [correspondence dated April - September, 2005, SLAM document files]. According to Ralph Jentsch, author of the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on George Grosz, the painting was likely sold through or by the Associated American Artists, Inc. [letter dated September 8, 2005, SLAM document files].
