NOTES
Square, lozenge, circle: alternating red and blue shapes on contrasting backgrounds vibrate with intensity. Victor Vasarely was a pioneer of Op Art, so named for the stunning “optical” effects its artists achieved. Kalota belongs to Vasarely’s Planetary Folklore series, in which he repeated “plastic units” of standardized shapes in different combinations. Its title is the name of a Transylvanian town famous as a center for Hungarian folk art, whose distinctive red and blue decorations may have inspired this painting.
