NOTES
Faith’s classical dress, uplifted expression, and headband, decorated with a cross, communicate her spiritual confidence. The sculpture is one of a trio of allegorical busts that depict the theological virtues Faith, Hope, and Charity. Hiram Powers placed the virtues in a different order than usual, explaining that “Hope was the bud, Faith the flower, Charity the fruit.”
Powers enjoyed a reputation as one of the most respected sculptors in the United States, though he spent nearly his entire career in Florence, Italy. A large number of the most successful American sculptors lived in Italy, where they found inspiration in the remarkable examples of ancient art located there.
