NOTES
This portrait records not only the physical appearance but also the forthrightness of the sitter. Henry Vanderlyn, a relative of the artist, looks directly out at the viewer. John Vanderlyn was the first American-born artist to study at the art academy in Paris. After his return to the United States, he had lofty plans for exhibiting a variety historical and mythical subjects. However, he was only able to find steady support for his portrait work.
