NOTES
Heads turned together conspiratorially, the two figures depicted here have an uncannily lifelike aspect. The image is a composite of a digitally printed photograph of ceramic sculptures made by the artist, and three lithographic impressions of wetly brushed pigment. The pigment echoes the brushstrokes with which Akio Takamori defined his figures’ faces and clothing. Takamori was born in Japan and traveled to the United States to study ceramic art in the 1970s. In Kansas City he studied with Ken Ferguson (1928–2005), then completed a graduate degree in Fine Arts at Alfred University in New York. Since 1993, he lived in Seattle where he taught at the University of Washington.
