NOTES
Four L-shaped bands of violet, green, magenta, and amber echo the L-shaped corner of this white square canvas, tilted forty-five degrees. In the mid-1960s, Kenneth Noland began exploring this untraditional orientation of his square canvases, enlivened by vibrant combinations of saturated colors. Here some bands are rendered with crisp borders, while others, particularly the magenta stripe, bleed into the white canvas. The measured progression of the equally spaced bands creates a visual thrust from right to left, an effect that is evoked by the title of the work: Drive.
