NOTES
The hands of this angel are extended in a gesture that suggests silent prayer. The gentle oval face framed by long flowing curls, the deep shadows caused by the fall of the fabric, and the sharp folds of the drapery are all characteristic forms of Cosimo Fanzago.

Fanzago was the leading sculptor and architect of 17th-century Naples, Italy. The angel, one of a pair, was originally conceived to adorn an elaborate tabernacle of marble and gilded statuettes designed for a church in Naples. Ultimately, the altar ensemble was erected without them.
