NOTES
This crudely-drawn figure is rendered in a thick reddish paint with an exaggerated, long nose, expansive shoulders, and scrawny stick arms. French artist Jean Dubuffet painted in an intentionally untrained style, mimicking Art Brut, a term coined by Dubuffet to describe the “raw” art made by individuals untainted by the influences of culture and society. He collected works made by children, psychiatric patients, and non-Western artists who were motivated, according to Dubuffet, by “pure and authentic creative impulses.”
