NOTES
The rippling surface of the Mediterranean Sea inspired the large, loose waves of this textile. Joonas was among designer Maija Isola’s first “macroprints” for the Finnish textile manufacturer Marimekko. These large-scale patterns have huge repeats, the distances between the start and finish of a motif. Isola often looked to nature for inspiration and frequently worked on the floor, using sweeping gestures to create her abstract designs. Originally produced in black-and-white in 1961, Joonas took on ever-wilder proportions in this blistering 1964 combination of saturated yellow and orange.
