NOTES
Strata of rich color evoke the stunning rock formations, mesas, blue sky, and vegetation of the New Mexico landscape. This was one of Fritz Scholder’s last abstract paintings, part of a series he made while an instructor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. Its horizontal stripes reflect his newfound interest in traditional Native American arts and his own heritage—he was one-quarter Luiseño. They also show his engagement with Abstract Expressionism and its enduring legacy of colorful abstraction.
