NOTES
In this arrangement of circular and triangular shapes, Georges Braque represents a green apple and yellow apple resting on a knife, a carafe and goblet, and a basket of eggs. These objects sit on a russet table cloth, which is tilted up so that the viewer gets both a horizontal and bird’s eye view. Braque depicts the table and background with thinned paint, in contrast to his objects that are rendered in paint thickened by the addition of sand.

Notes:
[1] Ilda Frantois, assistant to Elaine Rosenberg (Paul Rosenberg's daughter-in-law, who maintains the Rosenberg records), confirmed that the painting was acquired directly from the artist by Paul Rosenberg and then passed to his son Alexandre P. Rosenberg, who sold it to Sidney Shoenberg Sr. in 1949 [notes of telephone conversation between Ilda Frantois and Emmeline Erikson at the Saint Louis Art Museum, April 11, 2005, SLAM document files].
[2] According to the list of Shoenberg gifts with information provided by the donor, Shoenberg purchased the painting from A. P. Rosenberg & Co., Inc. on November 3, 1949 [SLAM document files]. A label from A. P. Rosenberg & Co., Inc. is on the reverse of the painting. The catalogue raisonné indicates that this painting was in the collection of Mr. Sydney Shoenberg at the time of the 1962 publication [Worms de Romilly, Nicole. Shoenberg Sr. are listed as the lenders to an exhibition in St. Louis which opened January 1961 ["A Galaxy of Treasures from St. Louis Collections."
