NOTES
The Mughal emperor Humayun (1508–1556; reigned 1530–1540 and 1555–1556) sits on a carpet upon a raised platform. He admires a falcon, which a prince, nearby, has tethered and perched on his glove. Humayun wears a jama, a knee-length coat, with a sleeved cloak over it. Around his waist is a kamarband or sash; Humayun holds the end in his left hand. He wears a turban deeply curved over his forehead and rising to a point. A plume extends from the turban crown, as does a curved ornament. The prince wears a similar coat falling below his knees, a different elaborate plumed turban, and pink pointed, heeled slippers.
