NOTES
In this work, Cy Twombly has drawn rows of charcoal and terracotta lasso loops that grow larger and looser toward the bottom of the canvas. Twombly called his practice “pseudo-writing,” considering his horizontal lines to be abstract sentences because they form no actual words. Twombly’s interest in repetitive regularity relates to the Minimalist aesthetic, even as his swirling forms suggest the individualized mark-making of Abstract Expressionism. Untitled refers to the artist’s contemporary “blackboard” paintings, which resemble chalk scrawls across a blackboard. However, it is distinguished by its more organic, earthy palette.
