NOTES
Only a few impressions survive of this incomplete engraving, all printed posthumously in the late 16th century. Scholars have disagreed about whether Albrecht Dürer made it, but beyond attribution, it is of great interest as a document of an engraver’s working process. The few working proofs of other prints by Dürer also show that he began with the outlines lightly drawn in before completing the linear network building light, shade, and volume, starting first with the background and then moving to the figures.

We regularly update records, which may be incomplete. If you have additional information, please contact us at provenance@slam.org.
