NOTES
Classic Maya images of captives are often ambiguous. The regal posture of this figurine contradicts other details, such as the ligatures or straps on the arms and legs, and the general construction of his throne-like litter. These details suggest that this captive is a noble bound to a scaffold with a tree-like shaft placed behind him. Rulers and royalty of conquered cities were often stripped of their courtly trappings. This work reflects the challenge of depicting a regal prisoner without his regalia. Here, long strips of cloth threaded through the ears replace fine greenstone earplugs. The rope-like yoke draped across the chest falls between the legs in a gesture that highlights the humiliation of naked exposure that typically preceded sacrifice.
