NOTES
Jerry Uelsmann exerted a tremendous influence on fine art photography of the 1960s with his manipulated imagery. He generated mysterious, synthetic worlds by printing from multiple negatives. Unlike 19th-century montages where negatives were rather crudely pieced together, Uelsmann’s prints are seamless and rendered with hallucinatory vividness. In this image, water and earth merge, and a distant tree grows improbably sideways, as if part of the dream of the woman sleeping in the meadow.
