Private collection, Webster Groves, MO, given by the artist [1] [2]
1972 -
Saint Louis Art Museum, given anonymously by a private collector, Webster Groves, MO [3]
Notes:
[1] A 1937 exhibition catalogue includes a checklist of works in the exhibition and identifies lenders for each work owned by someone other than the artist [A.C.A. Gallery, "Joe Jones," Oct. 24 - Nov. 13, 1937]. The listing for "Bottle Dancer" does not include a lender's name, indicating that, at the time of the catalogue's publication, the artist still owned the work, and the private collector had not yet acquired it.
A handwritten note in the document files, presumably written by a Saint Louis Art Museum staff member, indicates that the private collector received "Bottle Dancer" as a gift from the artist [SLAM document files].
[2] This owner expressed the desire to remain anonymous [SLAM document files].
[3] Minutes of the Acquisitions Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, June 13, 1979. A letter dated July 16, 1979, from Jack Cowart to the donor confirms that the donor's name will be withheld from the credit line [SLAM document files].
