[1] Jones painted Chloe Sherman's portrait in 1931 and that same year, she lent it to his first solo show ["Exhibition by Joseph Jones," no. 19, SLAM document files].

[2] A letter from William C. Sherman to James D. Burke dated November 8, 1979, states that William C. Sherman had received the painting by inheritance from his late mother. Another letter from Lynne Springer to William C. Sherman dated October 5, 1979, indicates that Sherman's attorney had taken Springer to Chloe Sherman's apartment in St. Louis to view the painting [SLAM document files].

[3] In a letter to James D. Burke dated November 8, 1979, William C. Sherman offers the painting as a gift to the Saint Louis Art Museum [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Acquistitions Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, November 21, 1979.
