About the program

Aymara textiles come from a long tradition of weaving in the Andes, which began with the earliest glimmer of human civilization. Formed from the rich variety of materials in nature—the silky cotton from the coast and fine hairs of the llama and alpaca from the highlands—textiles from the Andes were integral to the cultures that spanned the region. They offered protection from the elements as garments for clothing the body and tools for survival, including fishing nets and baskets. They also became integral to the artistic and cultural expression of ritual, religion, political power, and identity. Andean textiles were celebrated for their beauty, complexity, creativity, and fine material qualities from ancient times to the present day.
