Drop-in Tour with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis—Emma
Join a guided tour of SLAM’s collection inspired by the stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, which examines themes of courtship, class, identity, and self-discovery. This tour is offered in partnership with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Emma will be performed at The Rep from December 3–21, 2025.

About the program
1815 promises to be another eventful holiday season for clever Miss Emma Woodhouse. Highbury’s most charming—if somewhat meddlesome—young lady is once again indulging in her favorite pastime: matchmaking. With a most inconvenient interest in everyone else’s affairs, this author wonders: Will her schemes lead to love or disaster? As snow falls and hearts flutter, one truth remains universally acknowledged: Not even the lovely Emma Woodhouse is immune to the unpredictable arrows of Cupid. Emma Woodhouse prides herself on being a matchmaker with an impeccable track record, much to the chagrin of her dear friend Mr. Knightley. Her latest scheme revolves around the sweet Harriet Smith, whom Emma advises to reject a perfectly good marriage proposal in favor of another eligible bachelor. However, her best-laid plans are turned upside down by unpredictable displays of affection, unexpected rivals, and Emma’s sudden realization that true love may have been under her nose all along.
This tour is an excellent way to enhance understanding of the production and to reflect on the connections between visual art and theater. Volunteer Educators will meet attendees at the welcome desk in Sculpture Hall. Groups are limited to 15 participants per educator.
