About the concert

Early Music Missouri’s vocal ensemble and chamber orchestra will join forces for a festive cantata that depicts the story of the shepherds at the first Christmas. The orchestra of strings, recorders, Baroque guitars, and lute will also perform a set of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s rustic noëls before the full ensemble presents his famous Messe de minuit, a Christmas mass based on noël melodies. One of the most innovative French composers of the 17th century, Charpentier served as a composer and performer in a number of Paris’s most important churches and private chapels and regularly composed music for the Christmas season.

About the performers

Early Music Missouri began in 2018 with informal concerts. The group has since grown to become an important part of the region’s musical life, presenting concerts, workshops, master classes, and lectures regionally and nationally. Concerts feature medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical repertoire played on instruments (originals and reproductions) from these eras. Using historical documents and original musical scores, and guided by modern research, performances reflect a historically informed approach to technique, interpretation, and performance.
