Join author, historian, and SLAM alum Chris Naffziger for an exploration into art and local history in his book Adam Lemp and the Western Brewery.
While artist Charles Wimar is best known for his depictions of Native Americans and bison, he also painted pre–Civil War St. Louis, including The Adam Lemp Brewery, Saint Louis, 1859—a highly detailed painting depicting the cave property where the brewer stored his beer in the then-rural countryside of St. Louis. Drawing on archival research, Naffziger will share his research on the work of Wimar and one of the largest breweries in the city before Prohibition.
Chris Naffziger will be available to sign books immediately following the lecture.
Speaker Information
Chris Naffziger writes about the history and architecture of the Gateway City at his award-winning blog, St. Louis Patina. He has a background in Renaissance and early modern art, and has worked at various museums in Washington, DC, and St. Louis.

Adam Lemp and the Western Brewery tells the story of Johann Adam Lemp, who ranks among the most influential figures in St. Louis history, the founder of a brewery that left an indelible mark on the city. But the story of the German-American founder of the famous Lemp Brewery still lies shrouded in mystery in the Gateway City. Newly uncovered legal documents, newspaper articles and recent scholarly research in Germany will weave the fascinating tale of a man that is far more complex and interesting than previously understood.
