Member Lecture—Beyond the Boys’ Club: Women Artists from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art
Member Lecture and Book Club events are available exclusively to Museum Members. Join today!
Travel beyond the boys’ club of mid-century American art with Melissa Wolfe, curator of American art.
Many postwar artists, such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein, are household names. However, the art world of the early postwar decades wasn’t nearly as masculine as this list would suggest. In this talk, Wolfe delves into the leading role that women artists played during this time, creating art that was arguably some of the most transformative work of the 20th century. Join Wolfe to explore the work of familiar artists like Helen Frankenthaler alongside lesser-known but equally compelling figures in SLAM’s collection, including Esphyr Slobodkina, Irene Rice Pereira, Grace Hartigan, Honoré Desmond Sharrer, and Rosalyn Drexler.
