Regional Conference of the German Studies Association
The Saint Louis Art Museum is a location for Mizzou’s regional German Studies Association conference, titled Image, Text, Politics. The event—organized by the Mizzou School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the School of Visual Studies—is free and open to the public. At SLAM, the conference includes a curator-led tour of Always Modern: German Art and Design from the Collection along with sessions in the Education Center. The full schedule is below.
Image, Text, Politics: A Regional Conference of the German Studies Association schedule
1–2 pm, Gallery 235 and Sidney S. and Sadie M. Cohen Gallery 234
Melissa Venator, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Assistant Curator of Modern Art, will lead a tour of Always Modern: German Art and Design from the Collection. The tour begins at the welcome desk in Sculpture Hall.
2:30–4:10 pm, Education Center
A session titled Communist Art and Anti-Fascist Theory will include the following presenters and topics:
- Joe Bucciero, a visiting assistant professor from Oberlin College: “Marxism, Form, and George Grosz’s Portrait of Dr. Felix J. Weil”
- Annie Borneuf, a professor from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago: “Aby Warburg’s Theory of Fascism”
- Dana Szczecina, a doctoral student from the University of Missouri: “John Heartfield’s Socialist Realist Stage Design in the GDR”
