SLAM Cinema—The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
Spiritual rapture and institutional hypocrisy come to stark, vivid life in one of the most transcendent masterpieces of the silent era. The 1928 film will be accompanied by a live, original score by The Rats & People Motion Picture Orchestra. Not rated, 81 minutes.
About the film
Chronicling the trial of Joan of Arc in the hours leading up to her execution, Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer depicts her torment with startling immediacy, employing an array of techniques—expressionistic lighting, interconnected sets, painfully intimate close-ups—to immerse viewers in her subjective experience. Despite objections from government and church officials, The Passion of Joan of Arc was a critical success and today frequently appears on lists of the greatest films ever made.
About The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra
The Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra is the St. Louis area’s premiere silent film accompaniment ensemble. It has been composing and performing original scores for classic films since 2007. The group describes its sound as blending “symphonic instrumentation with experimental pop sensibilities, prominently featuring string trios, pitched percussion, piano, and guitars of all description, along with the occasional electronic flourish.”
