Teacher Workshop with Yacouba Sissoko
Current and preservice educators are invited to join us for a special workshop with Yacouba Sissoko, master kora player from the djeli tradition in Mali. Djelis are the musical storytellers in West Africa, a position that is inherited through a family bloodline. For centuries they have been the keepers of factual history and the fictional fables of past rulers, nobles, social groups, and families.

This teacher workshop is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Narrative Wisdom and African Arts. As part of the workshop, Sissoko will give a musical performance and will present on djeli culture, his personal history, the place of the kora in society, and the making of the kora. He will also lead participants in learning a song.
