Virtual Program—Simple Joys: Figurative Art in the Heyday of Abstract Expressionism
With Melissa Wolfe, curator of American art
Friends of American Art and Design Members are invited to enjoy a lecture by Melissa Wolfe, SLAM’s curator of American art, on the complexity of painting produced during the decade following World War II. While abstraction has typically been understood to express the tumult of this early Cold War period, Wolfe’s talk will explore figurative artists Doris Lee, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Ben Shahn, among others, whose works provide a lesser recognized though no less serious engagement with these tensions.
Registration is appreciated. RSVP before September 28 to 314.655.5390 or collectors.circle@slam.org. Online instructions will be provided at the time of registration.
Collectors Circle programs at the Saint Louis Art Museum are presented by the Betsy and Thomas Patterson Foundation.
