In collaboration with Counterpublic 2023, the Saint Louis Art Museum will screen Give it Back: Stage Theory, new video work by the Indigenous collective New Red Order.

Counterpublic is St. Louis’s triennial contemporary art initiative that runs from April 15 through July 15. Working in public places, cultural institutions, historic houses, and community gathering spaces, Counterpublic commissions dozens of artists, collectives, and community organizers to make and present works in St. Louis that engage the city’s histories and imagine new futures. The three-month festival also includes active education, research, residencies, performances, publications, public projects, and commissions.

Members of New Red Order have described the new work that will be screened at SLAM as “a reflection on St. Louis’s historical engagement with Indigenous peoples, with a specific emphasis on the presentation of Indigenous peoples and the razing of the mounds to clear space for the museum and 1904 World’s Fair.”
