ST. LOUIS, May 3, 2023—The Saint Louis Art Museum joins the Chamber Project St. Louis in celebrating the American Women in the Arts Festival, which culminates with a collaborative performance at the museum.

The festival highlights female composers and artwork from SLAM’s collection through performances and curator-led narration and tours.

Events gets underway Wednesday, May 10 with a “Very Open Rehearsal” featuring new music by St. Louis composer Stephanie Berg at 6:30 pm at the Thornhill St. Louis County Library Branch. The interactive performance, which includes opportunities for audience members to ask the musicians questions, is a rehearsal for the June 2 concert at SLAM.

SLAM American art curators Melissa Wolfe and Amy Torbert will then offer two tour opportunities at the museum—11 am on May 31 and 1 pm on June 1—which will explore stories of female artists and sitters from the museum’s collection. The free tours begin in Sculpture Hall and are limited to 20 visitors on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The tours complement the Chamber Project St. Louis performance American Girl: Determination, Innovation, and Triumph, which will take place at 7 pm Friday, June 2 in the museum’s Farrell Auditorium.

The concert will include the world premiere of “Tomorrow’s Garden,” by Berg as well as music by Pulitzer Prize winners Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Caroline Shaw and works by historic composers such as Amy Beach, Zenobia Powell Perry and Florence Price.

Wolfe and Torbert will provide narration as each composer will be linked through story or style to an artist or work of art.

Admission to the June 2 performance is $20. Museum members and students pay $5. Tickets are available on MetroTix.
