ST. LOUIS, July 25, 2023—Justice Henderson has joined the Saint Louis Art Museum as the 2023-2025 Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellow.

Named for African American artist Romare Bearden, the fellowship aims to expand the number of under-represented professionals working in art-related fields in museums, galleries, nonprofit organizations and universities. Fellows gain valuable hands-on experience working throughout the museum on specific assignments tailored to their background and interests.

Henderson holds a dual master’s degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in arts administration and policy and modern and contemporary art history, theory, and criticism. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree in studio art and journalism from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

She previously was an intern and adjunct lecturer with the Art Institute of Chicago where she organized intergenerational tours. She also interned at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark., where she conducted surveys, wrote blog posts and drafted wall texts for temporary exhibitions.

Henderson will join Charlie Farrell, the 2022-2024 Romare Bearden fellow.

In 2021, the museum expanded the program from a one-year paid fellowship to a two-year paid fellowship. A new fellow begins work each year, which will allow first-year fellows to work closely with those completing their second year of the program.

Now in its 32nd iteration, the Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellowship is a critical component in the museum’s long-established commitment to increase diversity among professional staff in the field. Past fellows have gone on to hold key positions at the Saint Louis Art Museum, as well as at other noteworthy museums and universities, including the Art Institute of Chicago, National Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and University of Texas at Austin.
