ST. LOUIS, July 30, 2024—Maggie Brown-Peoples has joined the Saint Louis Art Museum as the 2024-2026 Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellow.
Named for artist Romare Bearden, the two-year, paid fellowship provides hands-on experience working throughout the museum on specific assignments tailored to fellows’ backgrounds and interests.
Brown-Peoples holds a master’s degree in museum studies from the University of Kansas. She previously received bachelor’s degrees in communication and psychology, along with a minor in Black studies, from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Originally from St. Louis, Brown-Peoples has recently worked in visitor services at Craft Alliance, a nonprofit arts center in the city, and she was also an adjunct instructor focused on writing and art interpretation for a precollegiate program at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
During her time in graduate school, Brown-Peoples served as a curatorial assistant and a Mellon Foundation academic programs coordinator at the University of Kansas’s academic art museum, the Spencer Museum of Art.
Brown-Peoples will join Justice Henderson, the 2023-2025 Romare Bearden fellow.
In 2021, the museum expanded the program, which began 33 years ago, from a one-year paid fellowship to a two-year paid fellowship. A new fellow begins work each year, which allows first-year fellows to work closely with those completing their second year of the program. Past fellows have gone on to hold key positions at the Saint Louis Art Museum as well as at other noteworthy museums and universities, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art and University of Texas at Austin.
