Co-curated by the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum, the exhibition The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century illuminates the depth of hip hop’s influence over 50 years and features immersive installations, fashion, painting, sculpture, photography, and video, showcasing the complex, expansive, and international allure of one of the 20th and 21st century’s great cultural movements. The exhibition will open at the Saint Louis Art Museum on August 19, 2023. During the fall, we will offers a series of workshops and events for students, teachers, and general audiences.
Exploring with the Artist: Freestyle is a workshop that invites high school students to explore historical and contemporary connections to hip hop. Inspired by the exhibition, The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century, the workshop is visual arts focused and offers opportunities for students to respond to the exhibition through conversation and hands-on artmaking activity.

Program Description:
- Designed for High School students; grades 9-12th
- During the Museum visit, students will tour The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century.
- In the Farrell Auditorium, Saint Louis Story Stitchers Artist Collective will host a live podcast conversation led by four local high school students discussing themes related to the exhibition.
- A hands-on artmaking session offers students the opportunity to visually respond to elements of hip hop. Teaching artist Jen Everett, whose work is on view in the exhibition, will demonstrate an assortment of photography techniques while leading students in creating a design of their own.
Application Form
Enrollment Application: Teachers may register up to 15 participants (14 students and 1 chaperone), and we request that you enroll a minimum of 10 students. Complete the Exploring with the Artist Application Form to request to enroll your students. This workshop offers two timeslots for groups to choose from. Please indicate your preference on the application form. Visits will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis.

- Option 2: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
The program is offered free of charge and transportation assistance is available to qualifying schools.
