Docents

Docent guides inspire visitors to engage with works of art to enhance the visitor experience. Important skills needed for this volunteer position are patience, respect for all people, and the ability to connect quickly and communicate effectively with our audiences. Docent guides represent a public face of our Museum and help provide a welcoming and meaningful experience for our public.

The docent guide training program consists of two years of classes (September-May). Classes will focus on techniques for touring with all age groups and training in the art collection areas of the Museum. Our training tools prepare docents to connect in meaningful ways with our visitors, and to encourage visitor dialogue through lively conversation and a wide range of gallery activities. Docents primarily lead pre K – 12 school tours (75% of all tours),which may include writing, drawing and movement activities. Roughly 25% of our tours are for college level through adult visitors.

Docent guide training is held on Mondays from 9:30 – noon from September to May, with other additional days as specified by Museum Learning and Engagement staff. Individuals who wish to become a docent guide must submit an application.

Other Museum internship opportunities are offered periodically and will be posted as they become available.
