NOTES
Merging painting and sculpture, Jim Dine attached real objects to the surface of this canvas: a mirrored medicine cabinet, a toothbrush holder, and a roll of toilet paper. A yellow light fixture illuminates the arrangement of common domestic objects. Gestural brushstrokes recall Abstract Expressionism, which Dine encountered after moving to New York in the late 1950s. He comments ironically on the spiritual pretensions of this earlier movement by transforming his painting into a grimy bathroom wall.
