NOTES
A fully dimensional bear climbs up each end of this bowl, leveraging back paws against the surface to reach into the center. Augustus Bean (K’alyaan Eesh), transposed elements of historic carving styles—such as the use of shell inlay and a combination of shallow engraving with deep relief—into a scale and form that appealed to non-Native buyers.
Active in Sitka, Alaska, Bean was part of a generation of Tlingit artists who created work for their communities as well as souvenirs such as this for an emerging collectors’ market.
