NOTES
This panel of brocaded velvet (çatma) has a design of floral motifs within an ogival, or curved lattice, clasped by crowns. It is made with a light-green silk pile on a buff, satiny ground originally filled with silver threads—now largely lost. The design is closely related to Italian velvets of the 15th and 16th centuries, demonstrating the transfer of textile design patterns across the Mediterranean Sea.
Textiles such as this were likely made as furnishing fabrics in Bursa, located in northwestern Turkey across the Sea of Marmara from Istanbul.
