NOTES
Early critics complained that Max Beckmann’s figures always looked like models posing in his studio, an accusation borne out by this painting, which does not refer to a specific story or historical event. "The Prisoners" centers on a bound and unconscious female prisoner lying on her side. Other prisoners crowd around her in extreme expressions of despair and mourning, an early example of the artist’s lifelong interest in themes of violence and human suffering.
