Notes:
[1] Max Beckmann kept lists of most of his paintings which often included the dates that they were worked on and notes on who purchased them. According to Göpel, Beckmann recorded that this painting was started on September 19 and completed on November 13, 1949 in New York [Göpel, Erhard and Barbara Göpel. "Max Beckmann: Katalog der Gemälde." Bern: Kornfeld & Cie., 1976, cat. no. 801].
[2] According to the artist's diary, Morton D. May saw the painting in Beckmann's studio on November 15, 1949 and agreed to buy it the same day ["Max Beckmann: Tagebücher 1940-1950." München: Albert Langen-Georg Müller, 1955]. According to the record sheets maintained by Morton D. May, the painting was on consignment to the Buchholz Gallery in 1949 and May purchased the painting from the artist on January 4, 1950 [May Archives, Saint Louis Art Museum].
