NOTES
A woman in a yellow dress startles a group of Catholic Jesuit priests as they cross a gated churchyard. The humorous scene is evidence of Lyonel Feininger’s successful first career as a cartoonist and illustrator. Feininger was one of few American artists associated with Expressionism, a German modern art movement that appeared in the 1910s.
