NOTES
The woman looking out of this painting is Julia Feininger, the artist’s wife. She was a trained artist who supported her husband’s dream to leave his job as an illustrator to become a full-time painter. During their almost 50 years of marriage, Lyonel Feininger made hundreds of sketches and photographs of Julia, in which she often wore elaborate hats like this black toque. This portrait remained in the family’s possession until after her death in 1970.
