Notes:
The main source for this provenance is Winkler's and Erling's catalogue raisonné, cat. no. 176 [Erling, Katharina and Johann Winkler. "Oskar Kokoschka: Die Gemälde 1906-1929." Salzburg: Galerie Welz, 1995]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are noted.
[1] The painting is reproduced in a Viennese magazine courtesy of Paul Cassirer, Berlin, from the collection of Richard Lányi, Vienna ["Moderne Welt" Vienna, 1924. vol. 1, p. 19].
[2] The painting was exhibited in a 1928 exhibition, lent by Hans Simon, Berlin ["Moderne Meister aus Berliner Privatbesitz" Berlin, Nationalgalerie, 1928]. In 1930, the painting was offered at auction, but it does not seem to have been sold ["Deutsche und französische Meister des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Gemälde, Handzeichnungen, Plastik aus Berliner und Breslauer Privatbesitz" Paul Graupe, Berlin, lot no. 12].
[3] An invoice dated February 13, 1951 included a statement from Curt Valentin, indicating that the previous owner of the painting was Hans Simon, New York, formerly Berlin [May Archives, Saint Louis Art Museum].
[4] Last Will and Testament of M. D. May dated June 11, 1982 [copy, May Archives, Saint Louis Art Museum]. Minutes of the Acquisitions and Loans Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, September 20, 1983.
