NOTES
Hine Taizan's paintings exhibit an impressive mastery of technique. His brushwork is sure and bold in this monumental composition, from the moist strokes describing the random effects of rain and mist to dry touches that evoke the rough texture of rocks and mountains. Broad swatches of gray wash convey the impression of temperate rains bathing the landscape, while rich, dark inks suggest the shadows of luxurious spring foliage moistened by the season's showers. Taizan confidently placed his inscription and seals between two mountains painted on an exceptionally large sheet of imported Chinese paper that bears a stunning watermark of two dragons.
