NOTES
Susan Rothenberg depicts the Dutch Modernist painter Piet Mondrian dancing with a partner through an abstract landscape. Although this is a figurative work, the wildly gestural brushstrokes of the background are reminiscent of his painterly Abstract Expressionist canvases. Rothenberg applied paint in blue, yellow, and red, primary colors strongly associated with Mondrian. Here she pays homage to one of her favorite artists, and a lover of ballroom dancing, whose painting was famously inspired by American jazz music.
