Stanley (d.2003) and Lucy Lopata, St. Louis, MO, purchased from Alfred Spero [1]
1986 -
Saint Louis Art Museum, given by Stanley and Lucy Lopata [2]
Notes:
[1] Invoice to Mr. Lopata from Alfred Spero dated December 7, 1964 [SLAM document files]. When Mr. and Mrs. Lopata gave the enamel to the Museum, he reconfirmed his purchase of the enamel from Alfred Spero [handwritten notes on SLAM receipt letter dated December 3, 1986, SLAM document files]. In his correspondence to the Museum, Mr. Lopata does not indicate a previous owner of the enamel or discuss the dealer, Alfred Spero. However, a 1994 article states that Alfred Spero was a London sculpture dealer who specialized in Renaissance sculpture and decorative arts [Suffield, Laura. "Cyril Humphris, Sculpture Dealer: Continuing the Learning Curve." "The Art Newspaper," no. 38 [May 1994]: 31].
